What Documents to Take the Ferry? Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia (2026)

To take the ferry to Morocco, Algeria or Tunisia, the key document is a passport valid at least 6 months beyond your return date — an ID card is not enough (apart from the specific cases listed below). Here is the complete checklist by country and situation.

The passport: the 6-month rule

All companies recommend (and authorities often require) a passport valid at least 6 months beyond the return date. Check the expiry date BEFORE booking: renewal queues frequently exceed 4 to 6 weeks in spring, right before the crossing season. Every passenger needs their own — including babies.

Visas, case by case

  • Morocco: visa-free for the EU, UK, USA, Canada (≤ 90 days).
  • Algeria: visa required for French and European nationals (apply at the consulate several weeks ahead). French-Algerian dual nationals are exempt when travelling with their Algerian passport.
  • Tunisia: visa-free for the EU (≤ 90 days).

Minors: the exit authorisation

A French minor travelling without both parents must present:

  1. their personal passport;
  2. the exit authorisation form (AST — Cerfa no. 15646) signed by a parent;
  3. a copy of the signing parent's ID.

The minimum age for unaccompanied travel varies by company — check our FAQ before booking for a teenager travelling alone.

Vehicle and pets: the extra documents

  • Vehicle: registration in the driver's name, licence, green card covering the country, temporary admission (D10 in Algeria). Full details in our ferry with car guide.
  • Pets: up-to-date vaccination record (rabies), European pet passport, identification chip. Some companies require a vet certificate issued less than 5 days before.
