Departure from ALMERIA

Almería's maritime station sits on the Muelle de Levante, a few hundred metres from the old town and the Alcazaba. The building spreads 8,400 m² over two floors: operator desks on the ground floor, waiting rooms above. It is the Spanish port with the widest reach into western Algeria, alongside the Moroccan Rif, drawing traffic from as far as Murcia and Madrid via the A-7 and A-92. Desks are arranged by operator; access control and boarding are concentrated in the same area. There is a cafeteria, a cash machine, wifi and information screens. The city centre is close enough to wait in town rather than at the terminal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Almería – Oran: what is the shortest crossing to Algeria?

Almería is the European port closest to western Algeria: about twelve hours at sea to Oran, against some twenty from Barcelona or Valencia and more from France. For the Oranie, it is the most direct access — and the only one, with Ghazaouet, that avoids a full night. Road access to Almería via the A-7 and A-92 also makes it reachable from Madrid and the Spanish Levante without crossing all of Andalusia.

What formalities apply when entering Algeria by sea?

A valid passport and, for most European nationalities, a visa obtained before departure — it is not issued at the port. Algerian nationals and dual citizens travel on their Algerian passport. Checks on arrival take longer than on Moroccan routes, and temporary import of a vehicle follows strict rules, notably on the authorised length of stay. Allow generous time for disembarking.

How often does the Almería – Oran route run?

It is a low-frequency link, a few sailings a month off season and reinforcement in summer for the Algerian diaspora. The calendar is released in waves, often late, and vehicle spaces go quickly once summer sales open. In practice this crossing cannot be improvised: you book the ship first, then build the rest of the trip around the date you get.

Oran or Ghazaouet for reaching western Algeria?

Oran is the country's second city: the port opens straight into the conurbation, with all road and rail connections. Ghazaouet is a small port on the Tlemcen coast, an hour from Tlemcen and some thirty kilometres from the Moroccan border — it only makes sense if the far west is the destination. Both lines leave from Almería: the choice is about the final destination, not the crossing.

How do you get the Algerian visa before the crossing?

It is obtained from the Algerian consulate where you live, before departure: no visa is issued at Oran port or on board. Processing times vary widely by consulate and season, and lengthen sharply as summer approaches. Algerian nationals and dual citizens travel on their Algerian passport and are exempt. Booking the crossing before holding the visa remains a risky bet.

How long does disembarking at Oran take?

Longer than on Moroccan routes: police check, customs inspection of luggage and, with a vehicle, temporary import formalities. Allow one to several hours depending on the crowd, especially in summer when ships arrive full. The practical rule is simple: place no appointment, flight or non-refundable hotel booking in the hours after the theoretical arrival time.

What is there to discover in Oran after the crossing?

The fort of Santa Cruz, perched on the Murdjadjo, overlooks the bay and is reached by a hairpin road: it is the viewpoint that puts the port in perspective. Below, Place du 1er-Novembre, the regional theatre and the seafront promenade form the city's heart. Oran is also the capital of raï, born in its cabarets, and a city whose architecture still carries traces of its Spanish then French past.

Should you plan on cash for Algeria?

Yes: the dinar is not convertible outside the country, foreign bank cards are little accepted beyond major establishments, and cash machines taking them remain rare. Currency brought in must be declared on entry and the form kept until departure. It is one of the sharpest practical differences between the catalogue's Algerian and Moroccan links.

How long is the crossing?

The ferry crossing from ALMERIA to ORAN takes approximately 8h. This duration may vary slightly depending on weather conditions and the specific vessel used.

What is the ticket price?

Expect from 120 € on foot to about 1000 € for a car with cabin. Three factors apply: season (+40 to 60 % in summer), how early you book (−30 to 40 % in advance) and accommodation type. Indicative 2026 fares, to be confirmed at booking.

When should I arrive at the port?

For international ferry crossings, we recommend arriving at ALMERIA at least 2 hours before the scheduled departure time. This allows sufficient time for check-in, security procedures, and vehicle boarding if applicable.

Can I cancel or modify my booking?

Yes, bookings can typically be modified or cancelled according to the ferry company's terms and conditions. Cancellation policies vary by operator and ticket type. Learn more about cancellation policies.
