It is a direct link between Languedoc and the Algerian capital, across the Gulf of Lion and then the Algero-Provençal basin — around a day at sea, including a full night. It avoids Spain and its 1,000 kilometres of motorway entirely, as well as transferring through a Spanish port. For a family from southern France with a loaded car, it is the shortest total journey to Algiers.

Far more than on the Strait: operators ask you to report three hours before departure without a vehicle, five hours with one. The entrances are separate — foot passengers before Quai El-Djazaïr, opposite berth 11; vehicles at Quai El Djefena. Check-in closes one hour before departure for foot passengers, an hour and a half for vehicles. These margins are not indicative: they are enforced.

The maritime station is at the heart of the commercial port, on Quai El-Djazaïr, below the Casbah and minutes from Agha station. You therefore land straight in the city, with no transfer — a notable difference from Tanger Med, 45 kilometres from Tangier. Road connections east and west leave from the conurbation, and Houari Boumediene airport is some twenty kilometres away.

A few sailings a month, with a marked increase in summer. Sète is a seasonal-traffic port without the Strait's daily cadence: the calendar is published by periods and vehicle spaces run out quickly for July and August. It is a crossing to book months ahead when targeting the high season, and one that leaves more flexibility in spring and autumn.

Algerian customs apply precise allowances on personal effects and inspect loaded vehicles seriously — one of the sharpest differences from the Moroccan routes. Appliances, computer equipment and large quantities of new goods are liable to be taxed. Medicines must travel with their prescription. Checking with the consulate before loading the car avoids long discussions on landing.

Marseille is historically France's leading port towards North Africa and remains better served by rail, with Saint-Charles station a quarter of an hour from the terminal. Sète, more modest, is better placed for those coming from Languedoc, Toulouse or northern Spain. On this particular link, it is mainly the published calendar that decides: both ports operate in seasonal waves, rarely at the same time.

The crossing fills a full day and a night: you leave the Gulf of Lion at the end of the day and see the bay of Algiers the next morning. The cabin is booked with the ticket, meals taken on board or as a full-board package. As on all long routes, the car deck is locked while under way: whatever stays in the car is out of reach until berthing.

The Algerian dinar exclusively, not convertible outside the country: you cannot buy it before leaving and change it on arrival. Foreign bank cards are little accepted outside the major hotels of Algiers. Currency brought in must be declared on entry above the regulatory threshold, and the form kept: it justifies the sums held when leaving the country.

Expect from 199 € on foot to about 1300 € for a car with cabin. Three factors apply: season (+40 to 60 % in summer), how early you book (−30 to 40 % in advance) and accommodation type. Indicative 2026 fares, to be confirmed at booking.
