Departure from TANGER MED

Tanger Med is not in Tangier: the complex lies 45 km east of the city, at Ksar Sghir, facing the Strait. Its passenger terminal is the main point of entry for Moroccans living abroad and the heart of the Marhaba operation each summer. The port combines Strait shuttle traffic — hourly crossings to Algeciras and Tarifa in season — with the long routes to Sète, Marseille, Barcelona and Genoa. Since July 2025, terminal access is restricted to travellers holding a confirmed ticket for that same day: arriving the night before achieves nothing. Moroccan police and customs formalities are handled at the port — before boarding on departure, quayside on arrival. The port radio broadcasts continuously on 100 FM and an app gives live traffic conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Genoa – Tanger Med: how long is the crossing?

A little over two days: the longest crossing in the catalogue. The ship leaves Liguria, runs past Sardinia and the Balearics, then down the Spanish coast to the Strait of Gibraltar. Two nights on board make a cabin compulsory, and the meal package is chosen at booking. For Moroccan families settled in northern Italy, Switzerland or southern Germany, it is the only alternative to driving across France and Spain.

Where do you board in Genoa?

At the Stazione Marittima, the historic building transatlantic liners sailed from, still in service for ferries today. It borders the Porto Antico redeveloped by Renzo Piano, steps from Europe's largest medieval historic centre, and Genova Piazza Principe station is next door. The A10 and A7 motorways serve the port from France, Milan and Turin.

What are two days on board like?

The ships on the long routes have cabins, restaurants and outdoor spaces designed for a passage of this length. The car deck is closed for the whole voyage: medicines, a change of clothes, chargers and children's things must come out of the vehicle before departure. Bring something to fill the time as well — network coverage is intermittent offshore.

Is Genoa – Tanger Med better than driving through France and Spain?

By road, Genoa is some 2,200 kilometres from Algeciras: two and a half days of driving across Provence, Languedoc and all of Spain, plus tolls and two hotel nights. The ship covers the same distance in a little over two days, car in the hold and cabin booked. For a family leaving northern Italy, Switzerland or southern Germany, the difference in fatigue is decisive.

When does the Genoa – Tanger Med route operate?

The programme concentrates on the return season, from spring to autumn, with a marked summer increase for the Marhaba operation. High-season vehicle spaces and cabins go as soon as sales open, often several months ahead. Off season the service thins out sharply: you then go through Spain, reaching the Strait by road.

What is worth seeing in Genoa before two days at sea?

Europe's largest medieval historic centre begins at the door of the Stazione Marittima: the caruggi, alleys so narrow the sun never reaches down, lead to San Lorenzo cathedral and the Rolli palaces, on the World Heritage list. The Porto Antico redeveloped by Renzo Piano, with its aquarium, adjoins the terminal. Half a day is enough to take its measure.

What documents for the car when leaving Genoa?

The registration document in the driver's name, insurance covering Morocco — the European green card does not include it and an extension is bought online or at the port — and the passport. The vehicle's temporary admission is issued on arrival at Tanger Med, valid six months per calendar year, and must be handed back on exit. Vehicle dimensions are declared at booking: over two days at sea, the fare category weighs heavily.

How long is the crossing?

The ferry crossing from TANGER MED to GENES takes approximately 52h. This duration may vary slightly depending on weather conditions and the specific vessel used.

What is the ticket price?

Expect from 199 € on foot to about 1200 € for a car with cabin. Three factors apply: season (+40 to 60 % in summer), how early you book (−30 to 40 % in advance) and accommodation type. Indicative 2026 fares, to be confirmed at booking.

When should I arrive at the port?

For international ferry crossings, we recommend arriving at TANGER MED at least 2 hours before the scheduled departure time. This allows sufficient time for check-in, security procedures, and vehicle boarding if applicable.

Can I cancel or modify my booking?

Yes, bookings can typically be modified or cancelled according to the ferry company's terms and conditions. Cancellation policies vary by operator and ticket type. Learn more about cancellation policies.
