It is the fastest from Algeciras: about an hour, against an hour and a half to Tanger Med. Only Tarifa – Tangier beats it, at an hour door to door, but Tarifa is a small wind-exposed port whose sailings are more often suspended. Ceuta has another advantage: it is a domestic Spanish link, so there is no border control at boarding — a saving that, at peak times, far exceeds the half-hour of sea time gained.

Tanger Med handles Moroccan formalities on board or at the port and leaves you on the motorway to Tangier, Rabat or Fez. Ceuta defers them to the land crossing at El Tarajal, a few kilometres from the port, where waits can be considerable at busy times and vehicle lanes are not separated as they are in a port terminal. The sailing is shorter, but the full journey to the Moroccan road is not necessarily. For a long drive in Morocco, Tanger Med stays more predictable.

Because the route works like an urban shuttle rather than a sea crossing: an hour afloat, several competing operators, and a clientele making the round trip within the day for work, supplies or paperwork. Ceuta largely lives off this link, its only supply line besides the border. The result is a very tight cadence, where missing a sailing carries none of the consequences it would on a weekly route.

The city sits on a nineteen-square-kilometre headland closed by Monte Hacho, one of antiquity's two Pillars of Hercules. The royal walls, a navigable moat unique in Spain, the cathedral and the Sidi Embarek mosque fill a day. Free-port status also makes it a duty-free call.
