Customs allowances still apply on the way back to the mainland, and checks take place at Almería. That is a notable difference from the Moroccan links, where formalities concentrate on entering Morocco rather than on the return.

Year-round, with several sailings a week and a summer increase. It is effectively a public service link: Melilla depends on these sea routes for supplies and for its residents' travel, which guarantees a regularity the seasonal Maghreb routes do not have. If a sailing is cancelled because of the levante, the next departure is rarely far off.
