Commercial documents often say thirty-six hours, but actual departure and arrival times give more than forty: the ship crosses the Gulf of Lion, runs down the Spanish coast, passes the Strait of Gibraltar and then works back across the Alboran Sea. It is the longest crossing in the catalogue to Morocco, and the only one leaving France directly for the eastern Rif.

Because the drive to the Strait is about 1,800 kilometres from Languedoc — two days at the wheel, two hotel nights and the fuel, on top of the crossing itself. Boarding at Sète, those two days are spent aboard, car in the hold and a cabin booked. The trade-off is therefore less about the ticket price than the full cost of the journey — and about fatigue, which is decisive when travelling as a family with a loaded car.

A cabin is not a comfort option on a two-night crossing: it is the condition of the trip, and it is booked with the ticket, well ahead in summer. Meals are bought on board or taken as a full-board package, to be specified at booking. The car deck is closed while under way: everything you need must come out of the vehicle before departure, medicines and children's things included.

No: it is a seasonal route, sized for summer returns and school holidays, with one to two sailings a week at peak and gaps when it does not run at all. Sète is not Algeciras: you do not catch a boat here on impulse. The practical consequence is simple — on this route the departure date is chosen from the operator's calendar first, and the rest of the trip is built around it.

Beni Ensar sets you down in Morocco's Oriental region, the one furthest from the Strait ports. Oujda and the Algerian border are two hours away, Al Hoceima three along the Rif corniche, Fez four to five. For a family from that region, landing at Nador rather than Tanger Med saves 500 to 600 kilometres of Moroccan road — the route's central argument, far more than the crossing time itself.

This is the route of the full car: many passengers use the crossing to carry equipment, appliances or gifts to the Oriental. Operators accept it as long as these are personal effects, but Moroccan customs at Beni Ensar view quantities differently: beyond obvious family use, they reclassify it as commercial import and tax it. A roof box must also be declared, as total height sets the fare.

A cabin becomes an essential fallback: over forty-five hours, alternating open decks, meals and naps structures the day better than any entertainment. As the car deck is sealed for the whole passage, toys, comforters, medicines and spare clothes must come out of the vehicle before departure. Bring offline reading or viewing too: network coverage vanishes off the Gulf of Lion.

The fare looks high next to a Strait crossing, but that is not the comparison: it compares with 1,800 kilometres of motorway to Algeciras, then 500 more between Tanger Med and Nador. Add fuel, French and Spanish tolls, two hotel nights and wear on the car, and the gap narrows sharply — before counting two days of driving. It is that full calculation, not the headline price, that decides on this route.
