The crossing is markedly longer — a full night against about twelve hours — but Valencia sits much further up the coast: from Madrid, Catalonia or France, driving on to Almería adds five to seven hours at the wheel. The trade-off is therefore about the whole journey, not sea time alone. Valencia also has a port connected to the high-speed rail network, which Almería does not.

The port opens at the foot of the Murdjadjo, below the fort of Santa Cruz, minutes from Place du 1er-Novembre: you land in Algeria's second city, not an isolated port zone. From there the East–West motorway reaches Tlemcen and the Moroccan border in under three hours, Algiers in four to five, and Mostaganem in one. It is the best-connected entry point in all of western Algeria.

It is a seasonal service, opened mainly for the summer period and released in waves. Off season the link can be suspended entirely, and you then go via Almería, which carries most of the traffic to the Oranie. Checking actual availability for your dates is essential before building a trip around this crossing.

Crossing the Balearic basin fills a whole night: a cabin is the normal way to make this trip and is booked with the ticket. A reclining seat remains theoretically possible but sits badly with Algerian formalities that, on landing, can still take one to several hours. Arriving rested is not a comfort on this route, it is a precaution.

The metro links Manises airport to the maritime terminal in about forty-five minutes with one change, as far as Marítim-Serrería station. Joaquín Sorolla station, where high-speed trains leave for Madrid, is on the same network. As the port lies south-east of the city beyond El Cabanyal, it is not walkable from the centre: build the journey into your boarding margins.

No, in almost every case: Spanish rental contracts exclude leaving national territory, and Algeria even more explicitly than Morocco. Temporary import of a vehicle is moreover personal there — the vehicle must belong to the driver and leave with them. The East–West motorway, crossing the country over more than a thousand kilometres, starts from the conurbation: Sidi Bel Abbès is an hour away, Tlemcen and its Zayyanid Great Mosque two, Mostaganem an hour east, and Algiers four to five hours. Towards the coast, Aïn El Turk and the beaches of the Oran corniche are twenty minutes away. It is the best-connected entry point in western Algeria.

No: the Algerian dinar is the only legal currency, and it is not convertible outside the country — there is no point buying any before leaving. Exchange happens on arrival, in banks and licensed bureaux. Foreign bank cards are little accepted outside major hotels, and cash machines dispensing on a foreign card remain rare. Bringing currency to declare on entry is still standard practice.

June and September frame the peak: the route is open, the Balearic basin is workable, and you avoid the July-August saturation when the diaspora concentrates its travel. Summer in Oran is very hot and dry; spring offers a green coast and mild temperatures. In winter the route is often suspended — Almería then takes over towards the Oranie.

At least four hours, more in summer. Disembarking a full ship takes time, the terminal is south-east of the city, and you then need forty-five minutes on the metro to Manises airport with a change. Delays on this seasonal route are not rare. A flight taken the next morning often costs less, in nerves as much as money, than one missed the same evening.
