It is the only crossing that lands you in the heart of Tangier, at the foot of the medina, rather than at Tanger Med, 45 kilometres east. Fourteen kilometres of Strait, an hour at sea, between the two Pillars of Hercules: Jebel Musa on one side, the Rock of Gibraltar on the other. Without a vehicle and for a stay in Tangier itself, it saves an hour of transfer and a taxi fare to haggle over on arrival.

Tangier City port has given up freight traffic to become a marina and cruise terminal: the route is built for foot passengers, with very limited vehicle capacity. To ship a loaded car to Morocco, aim for Algeciras – Tanger Med or Algeciras – Ceuta. Tarifa remains the best option for a quick return trip, a weekend in Tangier or a day excursion.

Yes, and it is the route's main hazard. Tarifa is the windiest point in mainland Europe: the levante and the poniente funnel through constantly, which made the town's name among windsurfers. When the wind gets up, sailings are postponed or switched to Algeciras. On a tight return trip, allow slack and check traffic the day before rather than on the morning itself.

That is in fact the route's main use: an hour at sea out, an hour back, and you land at the foot of the Petit Socco. A passport is still compulsory — an identity card is not enough to enter Morocco. Mind the time change: Morocco is an hour behind Spain in summer, which lengthens the day outbound but dangerously shortens the window on the way back if you reason in local time.

An hour at sea, plus formalities: in practice an hour and a half door to door outside peak times, with no equivalent on the catalogue's other links. Tangier City port opens at the foot of the medina: the Petit Socco is five minutes' walk, the Kasbah fifteen. It is the only arrival in the catalogue needing neither shuttle, nor taxi, nor motorway.

Tarifa has no railway station: the train stops at Algeciras, half an hour away by bus. Direct coaches also link Seville, Cádiz and Málaga to central Tarifa, whose maritime terminal is a five-minute walk away. It is a comfortable crossing point for a car-free trip, with the caveat that wind suspends sailings there more often than elsewhere on the Strait.

The medina, the Petit Socco and the Kasbah make a half-day walking circuit from the port. The Kasbah museum, in the former sultan's palace, and Café Hafa overlooking the Strait complete the loop. With more time, the Caves of Hercules and Cape Spartel, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, are some fifteen kilometres away — but they mean a taxi and jeopardise the evening return.

The port is tiny and parking happens in town or on the car parks near the terminal, at rates well below those of Algeciras. As the route does not take loaded vehicles, leaving the car at Tarifa is the normal practice anyway: you cross on foot, visit Tangier, come back. That is what makes this the simplest link on the Strait for a short break.

The fortified old town, the castle of Guzmán el Bueno and Las Palomas island — mainland Europe's southernmost point, joined by a causeway. Los Lances and Valdevaqueros beaches, swept by the levante, are among the continent's most famous kitesurfing spots. From the Estrecho viewpoint you see both continents and the densest shipping traffic in the Mediterranean.

In the morning, before the levante builds: that easterly usually strengthens during the day, and it is what suspends sailings. An early crossing also leaves a full day in Tangier, with a late-afternoon return. If sailings are suspended, operators sometimes move passengers to Algeciras — hence the value of not scheduling a hard commitment right after the return.
