Departure from MOTRIL

Motril is the port of Granada's tropical coast, 3 km from the town centre and at the foot of the Sierra Nevada. Smaller than Almería or Algeciras, it turns that into its main advantage: short queues and quick boarding. It is the most direct crossing point to the Moroccan Rif from Granada, with services to Nador, Al Hoceima and Melilla operating from the Azucenas quay. The maritime station, undergoing a full refurbishment, remains sized for modest traffic: outside peak times you go from car park to ship in a few minutes. On-site services are limited — buy what you need in town first.

Arrival at TANGER MED

What to Expect on Arrival

Upon arrival at TANGER MED, you will disembark in Maroc.

Tanger Med is not in Tangier: the complex lies 45 km east of the city, at Ksar Sghir, facing the Strait. Its passenger terminal is the main point of entry for Moroccans living abroad and the heart of the Marhaba operation each summer. The port combines Strait shuttle traffic — hourly crossings to Algeciras and Tarifa in season — with the long routes to Sète, Marseille, Barcelona and Genoa. Landing comes with Moroccan formalities: police on board on most Strait crossings, customs and the vehicle's temporary admission quayside. The exit gives onto the A4 motorway, reaching Tangier in half an hour and continuing to Rabat and Casablanca. There is no pedestrian exit: a shuttle or taxi is essential.

  • Terminal : Tanger Med Port Center — N16, Ksar Sghir 94152
  • Getting there by road : From Tangier: N2, then A4 and N16. From Tetouan: A6, then N16
  • Driving times : Tangier 45 min · Tetouan 1 h · Rabat 3 h · Casablanca 4 h
  • Parking : Secure long-stay car park
  • Distance from the city centre : 40 km

Frequently Asked Questions

Motril – Tanger Med: where does this link fit?

It is an Andalusian alternative to the Algeciras corridor, leaving from Granada's tropical coast. It appeals to travellers coming from Granada, Jaén or Madrid on the A-44, who avoid the run down to the Strait and Algeciras' summer saturation. Its service is nonetheless episodic: Algeciras – Tanger Med carries most of the traffic to northern Morocco, with several sailings an hour in season.

How long does Motril – Tanger Med take?

A little over half a day, crossing the length of the Alboran Sea from the Granada coast to the entrance of the Strait of Gibraltar. That is far longer than the hour and a half of Algeciras – Tanger Med: the advantage lies on the Spanish side, on the drive to the port, not at sea. Do not forget the hour's difference between Spain and Morocco when reading the arrival time.

What if no sailing is offered on my dates?

Two fallbacks exist from the same region. Motril – Nador, operated year-round, reaches Morocco's Oriental region in about five hours. And Algeciras – Tanger Med, two hours' drive from Motril on the A-7, offers several sailings an hour in season — the safest answer when the date is fixed. The extra driving stays modest against the certainty of getting aboard.

What can you do in Motril before boarding?

Granada's tropical coast owes its name to a microclimate: sugar cane, cherimoya and avocado grow at the foot of mountains rising to three thousand metres. Salobreña with its hilltop castle and Almuñécar with its Roman remains are twenty minutes from the port. It is one of the few embarkations in the catalogue where waiting can safely become sightseeing, the port being three kilometres from the centre.

Does the time difference matter on this route?

Yes, and it is a constant source of error: Morocco is an hour behind Spain in summer. A noon departure from Motril reaches Tanger Med at a time which, read locally, seems to cut an hour off the crossing. Conversely, going Morocco → Spain, you lose an hour on landing. On a tight rail or air connection, the mistake is expensive.

Which sea do you cross between Motril and Tanger Med?

The Alboran Sea, lengthwise this time: the ship runs down from the Granada coast towards the entrance of the Strait of Gibraltar, keeping the Rif at a distance. It is a longer route than the perpendicular crossing to Nador or Melilla, and more exposed to the levante, which funnels through the Strait and runs up the basin. Morning sailings are generally the calmest.

Does Motril – Tanger Med suit a trip to southern Morocco?

Yes, because Tanger Med connects straight to the A4 motorway and then the Rabat – Casablanca – Marrakech axis: it is the best entry point for a long run south, whichever Spanish port you leave from. Motril adds quick boarding and easy access from Granada and Madrid, provided the calendar offers a sailing on your dates.

What do you need to load a vehicle at Motril?

The registration document, insurance covering Morocco and the passport; vehicle dimensions, roof box included, are declared at booking as they set the fare category. As the port is modest in size, vehicle queues are short off season and check-in is quick — a sharp contrast with the Algeciras ramps in high summer.

How do you reach Motril from Madrid or Granada?

The A-44 drops from Granada to the tropical coast in about an hour, crossing the Sierra Nevada at the Suspiro del Moro pass. From Madrid, allow five hours via the A-4 then the A-44. The port is three kilometres from central Motril, signposted from the N-340. It is the Mediterranean port most easily reached from central Spain without going through western Andalusia and Algeciras.

How long is the crossing?

The ferry crossing from MOTRIL to TANGER MED takes approximately 10h. This duration may vary slightly depending on weather conditions and the specific vessel used.

What is the ticket price?

Expect from 90 € on foot to about 800 € for a car with cabin. Three factors apply: season (+40 to 60 % in summer), how early you book (−30 to 40 % in advance) and accommodation type. Indicative 2026 fares, to be confirmed at booking.

When should I arrive at the port?

For international ferry crossings, we recommend arriving at MOTRIL at least 2 hours before the scheduled departure time. This allows sufficient time for check-in, security procedures, and vehicle boarding if applicable.

Can I cancel or modify my booking?

Yes, bookings can typically be modified or cancelled according to the ferry company's terms and conditions. Cancellation policies vary by operator and ticket type. Learn more about cancellation policies.
